Said to be one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, the Zimbabwean South Luangwa National Park spreads over 9050 square kilometers. Wildlife is in abundance with the exception of the rhino. Driving to the park from Lusaka international airport is an excellent way to start your safari holiday.
Recommended: flying in and hiring an equipped 4x4 vehicle for the 125 km trip to the Chipata gate. Well planned in advance a safari in Zambia is a wonderful experience. The road is good however it can be somewhat corrugated in places. There are short cuts accessible by 4x4 but require planning as the roads deteriorate and are sometimes impassible during the rainy season. If not driving ask your prospective accommodation provider about local flights and transfers. Lodges and camps have organized game viewing drives with experienced rangers which when combined with your own plans will assure you of some excellent sightings.

Make sure your passport is up to date and is valid for at least six months after your intended return date to your country of origin.
You will need blank pages in your passport. If you are cross border traveling you should aim to have at least two blank pages left by the time your full holiday is finaly completed.
When you purchase travel insurance declare what your activities will be and understand the limitations in your policy before you travel.
Check if the country you are traveling to requires that each visitor requires a visa. There are quite often different visa regulations for visitors from different countries. Be warned you will not pass through any immigration or border posts without the correct documents.
Check if the region you are traveling to is malaria free. If not don't take a chance, know when you should start your anti malaria treatment well in advance before the start of your holiday.
Always drink water from a reliable source. If you are not sure boil the water first. Carry ample water and food in your vehicle in case of delays or breakdowns. If hiring a 4x4 vehicle check that there is a full tool kit and spare. For remote trips you will need more than just normal kit. In some areas your cell/mobile phone will be useless as there is no signal or service.
National park rules are there to protect visitors, animal and the environment. Respect the land. Under no circumstances leave litter. Major damage to the park and serious injuries to animals can be caused by just a carelessly discarded bottle or can.
Finally there is no one more qualified than the official guides and rangers in the national parks. Listen to their advice and ask your questions. The experience of an African safari is unique and one that will stay with you for ever. Prepare well and the African Safari will be the most memorable trip in your lifetime.
SA Holidays would like to know your experiences on your safari or visit to a National Park. We would also like your comments on how we can improve our site to assist other prospective safari travelers. Please mail us at comments with your experiences and comments.
