Century City is a recently developed suburb of Cape Town situated about 10kms from the city centre on the main N1 highway. Originally the two main developments were Canal Walk shopping centre, which is now the largest shopping mall in Africa, and Ratanga Junction theme and amusement park. Many other buildings have now been added to the development including both residential and business properties. Many of the apartments are let for short holiday periods.
The Century City development was originally a wetland area and to comply with the conservation regulations many of the water features have been preserved including the 16 hectare Intaka island. A trip in a gondola along one of the canal's to the island is a very pleasant experience. Presently the largest apartment building is the 15 storey Knightsbridge building identifiable by it's two towers and bridge across the middle containing penthouse apartments.
The Colosseum development is mixed purpose use building and has a 70 room four star hotel. Other residential and short let developments include Villa Italia, The Oasis, The Island Club, Century View and Bougain Villas. Development is ongoing with several large apartment and hotel buildings yet to be completed. Canal Walk is the largest shopping mall in Africa. The mall contains over 400 stores, 20 movie theatres, numerous restaurants and bars, an entertainment and science centre.
