About Crete
Crete is the largest of the Greek Islands. An island of contrasts, from the coastal areas with regular tourist attractions and fine beaches to rural Crete with a mountainous interior and stunning scenery. The coastline of Crete borders the Libyan sea, the Myrtoon sea, the Karpathion sea and the Sea of Crete. Typical summer temperatures in Crete are in the high 20's to low 30's.
It is estimated that over 30 million olive trees grow on the island. Crete claims to have the oldest living olive tree of age over 2000 years. A wealth of myths, legends, history and culture cannot fail to impress tourists to the island. The museum in Heraklion and the palace of Knossos are an absolute must for every visitor to Crete. Self drive on the island is an excellent way to see some of the spectacular scenery and visit the many small attractive rural villages. However care must be taken on some of the interior roads as they are sometimes not in a good condition, narrow and full of sharp bends.
Every type of accommodation is availaible in Crete from luxury holtels, complete with gym, pool and sports facilities to self catering apartments, village houses and camping. There are a number of smaller islands close to Crete which can be visited on one day cruises from various departure points.
