Gavalohori's official population numbers around 350 people but during the summer months the number swells with the influx of visitors and relatives.
Walks and cycle routes around the Gavalohori area are considered to be an excellent way to view the historical surrounds and spectacular scenery.

About Gavalohori

Gavalohori is situated in West Crete, approximately 3kms from the long sandy beach of Almirida. Many of the buildings and beautifully restored houses in the village are officially protected. Chania airport is about 45 minutes drive and Heraklion airport about 2 hours. Both are international airports.

Very much a traditional Cretan village but now with modern amenities to serve its residents and visitors staying in the local self catering holiday accommodation. There are taverna's, cafe's, a bakery and two well stocked mini market's. Winters in West Crete are very short which makes Gavalohori an ideal location for those increasingly popular out of season breaks.

Gavalohori has a small but interesting museum exhibiting traditional and historical crafts. The museum buildings are a historical record of Cretan architecture with an interior display of traditional Cretan living conditions from bygone days. The Gavalohori women's co-operative, situated in the village square, sells authentic hand made lace, embroidery, knitting and a variety of local produce. At the edge of the village are a number of wells built in surrounds of a stunning landscape, during the time of royal family Gavalades who the villag is named after.
