Wildlife is in abundance especially in the Natal Drakensberg Park which makes up a large area of Central Drakensberg. Bushman Rock Art sites left behind by the primitive San people who populated this area hundreds of years previously are numerous and accessible for viewing.
Mountain peaks include Champagne Castle which is the highest at 3374 meters, Giants Castle, Cathkin Peak, Windsor Castle and Cathedral Peak. Spectacular views and stunning scenery are an unforgettable feature of the Central Drakensberg region. Access to some of the most remote scenic places are by walking trail or 4x4 trails.
Winter time often transforms the landscape into a picturesque wonderland, with winter scenes to delight any winter landscape artist.
Parks, nature reserves and game reserves are home to a variety of wildlife. Hikers will often come across different types of buck from the smallest Duiker to the larger Eiland not to mention the eagles, vultures and the occasional baboon up in rocky heights.
The villages of Bergville and Winterton provide easy access to the well known reserves and resorts such as Spioenkop Nature Reserve, The Royal Natal National Park, Cathkin Park, Monks Cowl state forests, Rugged Glen nature reserve. Most rivers in the parks are well stocked with trout giving the angler chance to catch fish and appreciate the natural beauty of the surrounds.
The Central Drakensberg area also provides access to the historical battlefield sites, monuments and graveyards of the Anglo Boer war as well as the earlier bloody conflicts between Voortrekkers and Zulus. In 1895 the remains of those killed in the battle of blood river were re-buried at the farm Roma near Chieveley and the memorial erected is now a national monument.
