Hermanus is a much favoured holiday location for South Africans and visitors to South Africa alike.
It is the foremost place along the coast for land based whale watching and is recommended by the
World Wildlife Fund as one of the best viewing spots in the world today.
The Walker Bay area attracts whale watchers from all over the world.
Situated in the Overberg region there are two routes from Cape Town. The faster route along the N2
and the slower coastal route along the R44/43. The slower route passes through a number of coastal
resorts with numerous scenic and interesting stop off points on the way.
The old harbour museum houses the history of whaling and fishing in the area. Restored boats, weapons
and a whale skull are part of the exhibits.
Hermanus has some excellent unspoiled beaches which are perfect for walking and horse riding. Grotto Beach
is the largest beach in Hermanus and has been proclaimed a "Blue Flag" beach which ensures its preservation
as a world heritage site.
The rising thermals rising around the rugged heights of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve attract paragliders
from all over the world.
Accommodation of all types is available in the Hermanus area from backpackers (where you can eat from the
evening braai/barbecue for about R60) to 5 star hotels and self catering apartments. Make your reservations
early especially during the whale viewing months of late winter, spring and early summer.
