Pietermaritzburg was named after two of the most famous names in the history of the Voortrekkers, Piet Retief and Gerrit Maritz. Today the there are many national monuments in the local and surrounding areas dedicated to the many who lost their lives then and during the many years of conflict which followed. Pietermaritzburg's Garden of Rememberance is a memorial to those lost in the many wars including the Anglo Zulu War, Anglo Boer War and two world wars.
Pietermaritzburg is located in a particularly good position for tourists looking to base their holiday accommodation in the Green Midlands of KwaZulu Natal, especially visitors combining an interest in South Africas history with trips to enjoy the beaches and coastal attractions in and around Durban.
From Pietermaritburg it is just a short drive of 23 km's to the Howick Falls at 95m high, one of 6 waterfalls in the area. There is plenty of recreational watersport activity particularly at Midmar Dam on the Mgeni river close to Howick Falls. And just a couple of Km's further from Pietermaritzburg past Howick marks the start of the Midlands Meander at Lions River hamlet. A trip from Pitermaritzburg to Howick and then following the R103 through Lions River towards Mooi River has several villages housing art studios and craft workplaces where visitors can watch the artists working. This area also the gateway to some of the Drakensbergs resorts and nature reserves.
