About Portugal
Portugal, a land of great contrast in character, scenery and its peoples ways of life. At the extreme southwest of Europe, Portugal is the western section of the Iberian peninsula. Portugal's only neighbour is Spain with borders formed by the Minho river and mountains to the east. Portugal's climate varies from region to region. Inland areas can be hot and dry during summer while coastal area temperature are slightly lower. Winters are colder inland especially towards it's border with Spain. However compared to the northern European countries Portugal's winters are very mild. Winter snowfall is possible in the Serra da Estrela mountains where it is sometimes possible to ski.
The Algarve region enjoys a Mediterranean type climate and has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Portugal. The capital city, Lisbon is best seen on foot but it's steep hills can soon tire the unfit tourist. It's architecture varies from district to district. Stone staircases, restaurants, upmarket department stores and tea shops are all a feature. To the north of is Portugal's second largest city of Porto and has history of some 4000 years. Touring inland and well away from thecoast reveals enchanting little towns and quaint villages surrounded by magnificent scenery. A well researched trip to the inland regions can be a tremendous and unforgettable experience.
All types of accommodation are available in Portugal from 5 star hotels to camping and caravans. When traveling the interior regions the most enjoyable way to stay is with local residents in the many B&B's or guest houses. Genuine warm hospitality and local knowledge offer visitors unique access to local customs andstories in abundance. Portugal has a good road network including motorway's, national roads and municipal roads. All motorway users must pay tolls. The railway network covers the whole country and tourists can purchase special tickets allowing unlimited travel for a 7, 14 or 21 days. Regular coach services run between Portugal's main towns and cities. Car rentals are available in the main towns, cities, international airports and international rail terminals. Check the companies rental policies in advance if possible
