To this day the proud naval influence over Simons Town is very evident. During the second world war over 200 naval and merchant ships were repaired here making a very important contribution to the allied forces. Simons Town naval history can best be appreciated by joining one of the organized walks which takes visitors through the naval museum.
To leisurely walk the main road through Simon's Town on a summers day is an experience which will stay with you for many years. The historical and very picturesque buildings, mostly shops and restaurants on the lower level but shaded by the large verandas from the upper levels are just delightful.
Just minutes out of Simons Town is the Boulders Beach penguin colony. The protected colony of Jackass penguins numbering in the region of 2300 birds can be viewed in their natural environment both on land and swimming at speed from observation points on the rocks. Don't miss the chance to visit Boulders while you are in the area. Take a sandwich or two, sit on the rocks and watch as the penguins carry on as if they were not observed.
