Traveling from Cape Town, Somerset West is most easily reached via the N2 highway or by a longer route on the R102 through Goodwood, Kuils River and Eerste River. The first significant settlement in the area was that of a cattle post on land purchased from local people in 1672. During the 18th century the farm and vineyards of Vergelegen were established which stiil stand today fully restored by it's owners, part of the mining group "Anglo American". Today the estate still produces world renowned fine South Africa wines. The estate is open to the public for historical and wine tasting tours. Vergelegen is only one of the many other well known wine producing estates in the Somerset West and Stellenbosch area.
The nearest beach to Somerset West is the popular wide sandy beach at The Strand just 8 kms away.
Somerset Mall shopping and entertainment centre is one of the larger precincts in the Western Cape with most of the major retailers in attendance. A wide choice of cinemas, restaurants, fast food, coffee shops, music, books and leisure entertainment combine to make the mall a one stop for all experience.
On the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains the Helderberg Nature Reserve contains a variety of fynbos and fauna including the King Protea and Bontebok. There are signposted short walks and longer hikes with picnic spots (no fires or bbq's are allowed inside the reserve).
