About Hout Bay
Hout Bay is about 15 km's out of Cape Town and can be reached on good roads by routes on both sides of Table Mountain. Magnificent views and spectacular scenery are features of the coastal route via Camps Bay and Chapman's Peak. Allow plenty of time when driving this route due to the winding roads along the mountain side. There are a number of view points along the way where travelers can stop to take photo's and just enjoy the world famous scenery.
An important fishing center since the 1940's Hout Bay has a busy harbour for the local trawlers and fishing boats. Fresh fish can be purchased at the local fish market. For the adventurous game fisherman organized trips leave from Hout Bay on expeditions to catch a variety of gamefish including longfin tuna, swordfish, marlin and yellowfin. For those who prefer to eat seafood without the trouble of making a catch a seafood restaurant can be found in Mariners Wharf which lies between Hout Bay's beach and the harbour.
Just to the north of Hout Bay is the World of Birds Wildlife sanctuary which should not be missed while in the area. It is the largest bird sanctuary in Africa and the second largest in the world. Many of the 450 different species of birds are housed in the walk through aviaries.
