About Jeffreys Bay
Jeffreys Bay (Jeffreysbaai) is situated just off the N2 highway and about an hour's drive from Port Elizabeth. World famous as a surfing destination and a surfing competition venue. Jeffreys Bay hosts the annual Billabong Pro international surfing event in July with surfers and spectators from the world over attending. During the South African winter monthsthe waves are at their most challenging. Jeffreys Bay is perfectly situated for visits to the Addo Elephant park, the Tsitskamma Forest, the Baviaanskloof Wilderness area, the Lombardini Game Farm with Rhino, Giraffe and many different types of buck.
For golfers the St Francis Bay golf club, renowned for it's hospitality, offers an 18 hole coastal golf course, well worth a couple of rounds. Hiking trails at nearby Oyster Bay range from distances of about 3.5km to 15km through places of natural beauty. For fishing enthusiasts there are charters available in the Jeffreys Bay area, including big game (Tuna and Marlin). Fishing equipment can be hired locally. From June to October whales can be seen feeding and breeding offshore. Horse riding for both beginners and the experienced is available at the farm Papiesfontein just outside Jeffreys Bay. Jeffreys Bay has two museums. The shell museum which houses a large variety of deep sea shells and marine life skeletons. Also for surfers the Surf Museum exhibits a history of surfboards, people, personalities and the spirit of surfing only fully understood by dedicated surfers.
Accommodation in Jeffreys Bay includes the Island Vibe backpackers with a view of the beach. Perfect for keeping an eye on the wave action. The hostel hires out surfboards and has mountain bikes for the use of guests. Jeffreys Bay has excellent self catering accommodation available and there is a fine selection of guest houses offering bed and breakfast
