About Oudtshoorn
Situated at the foot of the Swartberg mountains in the Klein Karoo, Oudtshoorn became a major producer of Ostrich feathers in the late 1800's. The Karoo's hot dry climate is ideal for Ostrich farming and today there are still a number of important farms in the area. Visitors can tour the show farms, watch Ostrich races and browse the curio and gift shops. The cultural and farming history of the oudtshoorn area is represented at the CP Nel museum and well worth a visit.
Close by in the foothills of the Swartberg mountains lies the Cango caves. Tours of the chambers to view spectacular dripstone formations, stalactites and stalagmites are run at regular intervals.
Accommodation in Oudtshoorn varies from backpackers to hotels. There are refreshments available at the show farms. Oudtshoorn has a number of restaurants serving local fare with Karoo style hospitality
