East London (Oos-Londen) Attractions
Situated at the mouth of the Buffalo river, East London is the only major river port in South Africa. East London is very often referred to as the "Gateway to the wild coast and sunshine coast" as it is the last major city before leaving the eastern cape towards the Transkei region. Undoubtably East London has some of the finest beaches in Southern Africa. Nahoon Reef is a paradise for surfers and is well known as an international surfing venue. Good weather and the warm Indian Ocean make East London an ideal location for water sports including sailing, swimming, kite surfing, water-skiing and board sailing. Anglers will find ample excellent spots for fishing near the river mouth or in the many lagoons and gullies.
For travelers and tourists there are all types of accommodation available from hotels to backpacker. As with all other coastal locations in the region booking your accommodation is recommended especially during the peak months of December and January when visitors from the Transvaal normally take there main summer break. Visitors to East London will enjoy the laid back, friendly atmosphere typical of coastal towns in the Cape Provinces.Visitors should pay a visit to the East London museum where a model of the Coelacanth fish originally caught near East London is on display along with some fine examples displaying the cultural history of the Xhosa peoples. The Coelacanth fish was believed to have become extinct with the dinosaurs. Learn much more about the many interesting East London facts and places at: Wikipedia East London
