During the South African summer months the Strand is a popular tourist resort with both residents of the Cape Town suburbs and visitors from outside of the Western Cape. The beaches are considered safe for swimming and there are a number of good surfing spots. If your accommodation preference is for self catering beachfront apartments, bed and breakfast guest houses or hotels there are plenty to choose from in the town.
Access to the Strand by road is a straightforward journey from any location with the N2 highway passing close to the nearby town of Somerset West just 10 km's from the Strand. Taking time to drive around the coastal roads to Cape Town via Muizenberg and Cape Point then Chapmans Peak visitors can see some of the magnificent views famously associated with the area. Best to allocate a full day to do this trip stopping off at the many small villages and towns along the route all with their own character and attractions. Traveling in the opposite direction from the Strand through Gordons Bay, Pringle bay and Bettys Bay is less congested but still very scenic allows access to some of the best in season whale watching points in the area.
Sports enthusiasts are well catered for with most water sports, golf and a covered Olympic sized heated swimming pool open throughout the year. Fishing is popular around the Lourens river mouth from the beaches and rocky outcrops and diving is possible with organized trips or for the experienced individual.
